Diploma in Pastoral Care & Counselling
The course is comprised of 6 modules which are delivered over 2 academic years (420 hours of class-based teaching) and a supervised work placement of 100 hours. The programme is accredited by the Counselling Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body (CPCAB).
Learning Outcomes
The diploma is equivalent to CPCAB’s Level 4 in Therapeutic counselling and the modules dovetails into the 7 units outlined by the Award Body for counsellors; (work ethically, safely and professionally with clients, work within a coherent approach, use theory and theology to work with client diversity, work within a pastoral approach, work with self-awareness, work within a coherent theoretical framework and work reflectively.

Applicable to Pastors or individuals who have been nominated by their Pastors.

Programme Outline
The Christian Counselling Debate, Introduction to the Core Theoretical Model (Person-Centred) and introductory counselling skills
Counselling Models (psychodynamic, cognitive behavioural, integrative and person-centred) and key counselling skills
Group work, self-awareness, professionalism and the Christian counselling perspective (Counsellor-counselee relationship, Professional practice, ethics, ACC & BACP codes of ethics, working with other professionals)
Common emotional problems (mental illness, grief work & rejection, anxieties & PTSD, ramification of forgiveness/ unforgiveness, conflict resolution, anger management, phobias). In this module we also looked at contemporary issues - multicultural and transcultural counselling in a diverse and complex society, Jesus the model counsellor and a theology of suffering).
Advanced counselling skills, the counselling practice and the environment (this included personal attributes, personal development, the counselling practice, introduction to work placement and developing a portfolio)
Specialist areas of counselling (introduction to Family work, Marital work, Eating disorders, Adolescent counselling, Co-dependency, Anger Management and Abuse)
